First
Anniversary of “Slovenska Palma”
We would
like to thank everyone who attended our First Anniversary Meeting. We hope
you all had a great time meeting your old friends, and we hope you have
made a few new ones too. Our plan is to meet several times a year. With
your support, we will continue to meet new friends and keep Slovenian
culture and language alive.
Our first anniversary was held
at the Fort Lauderdale Yacht & Tennis Club on
Saturday, December 10th 2005.
More than hundred-and-twenty Slovenians attended, many from other
Slovenian clubs. We welcomed our guests from other parts of Florida and we
were really excited to meet our fellow Slovenians from Argentina,
Canada,Venezuela, Peru, Cleveland, and of course from Slovenia.
Evening
started with authentic Slovenian dinner. Dragan from Bagel Palace prepared
goveji golaz, segedin and roasted pig for us. Robert Scerbak was making
sure our throats were not dry. And potica was made by our good aunt Rezka
Smuk from Cleveland. The day before our party she baked 10 poticas. And
for our next meeting she promised to make us ajdove zgance, sauerkraut and
kranjske klobase.....
After a good diner we continued with cultural program. First we invited
our opera singer Veronika Fink - Menville and her husband Gabriel to
perform for us. Together they sang "Napitnico" - Libiamo from Traviata.
We were all very excited to listen to their performance.
Next we had a suprise of the evening. Mr. and Mrs. Lauko were celebrating
their gold anniversary and we gave them nice rose bouquet and wished them
all the best in comming years. Emil Lauko is from Stajerska and his wife
Franciska is from Priorska. They met 50 years ago in Venezuela where they
started their second home.
We continued program with two accordion players from SNPY 787 (Jack
Berfield and Joe Virant). Beside them there were also playing bass guitar
suprise guest John Ferfolja from Canada and wife of deceased Jonny Debevec,
Mrs. Layne on drums.
Program coordinator through the night was Maja Lesnik. In Slovenia they
know her as part of duet M4M under lead by Slavko Avsenik Junior. Our
dearest Maja just got engaged to her Italian boyfriend and we wish them
both lots of love and happiness.
The final
surprise of the night was presented to us by the Belokranjski Smuk
brothers Tony and Frank from Cleveland who walked into the dance hall
playing the polka with their Slovenian costumes from the Belokrajina
region. Tony was playing the button box, and Frank accompanied him with
his clarinet. We all took part in singing a few SLovenian verses and many
also took to the dance floor to enjoy the polkas and waltzes.
We also
had an exciting prize drawing where Sterling Vacations provided an amazing
first prize. Stanko Dejak from Fort Lauderdale was the winner of this
grand prize - 7-day cruise around Europe. To his surprise, Stanko
also had also met with a
classmate Mr. Tom Celestina from his grade school years from
Cleveland.
If anyone is planning on
getting away to Europe in the near future, we strongly recommend taking a cruise around
Europe. You can choose
from cruises taken in the beautiful seas of the
Adriatic, Mediterranean,
and others. Sterling Vacations will fulfill your every travel
need at the most reasonable prices. For other travel destinations and
information, please visit

In 2006 we start with
membership .WE have already new members from Florida, Connecticut and
Cleveland. Everyone is welcome to join us, no matter what language they
speak and where they come from, as long as they love our Slovenian
Culture. Our main interest is gathering Slovenian people from the entire
United States,
hot only from State of Florida. In addition, we would like to preserve our
Culture and share the beauties of Slovenia with the whole world. True, our
country is small, but full of wonders.
Also we
